Sustainable Does Not Equal Expensive

For a long time, I thought “sustainable” meant recycled paper, wind farms, solar energy and dollar signs. But now I’ve started thinking of it in another way.

five business cards for the Baltimore Design Center

These are a few business cards for the Baltimore Center for Design. The group needed cards, but didn’t have the funds to cover the costs. I contacted my friendly printer, Jeff Herget of Consolidated Printing and I explained to him my dilemma. I asked if he could cut down some press sheets from various print jobs to business card size. Jeff gave me a box of over 2,000 cards. I then printed the web address on label paper and adhered them to the cards. Now the design center group has almost completely free and sustainable business cards!

My goal for the design center collateral is to make it as sustainable as possible, and hopefully as inexpensive as possible. For example, if we need shirts made with the logo, why not go to Good-Will or garage sales to find used clothing to screen print on? Or take old letterhead a company is throwing away (rebranding and relocation are common reasons) and use a stamp to cover the old information. So instead of thinking how I can create new artifacts from sustainable materials made with wind and solar energy, I’m asking myself how can I make something new again. The challenge will be not sacrificing good design.

I will keep you all posted on my progress. In the meantime, I would love to know if you have any suggestions or experience in sustainable, but inexpensive design.

The design center cards are featured on Crafting a Green World. So check it out.
